Why Budde Schou chose Qthena after evaluating several AI platforms for IP

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jesper Wenzel, CCO & Equity Partner of Budde Schou, one of Denmark’s oldest intellectual property firms, with a history spanning approximately 125 years. With around 22 years of experience in the patent profession and a specialisation in patents related to electronics, software and AI, Jesper shares why Budde Schou selected Qthena after evaluating several AI platforms, how the firm is integrating it into its work, and how adoption among colleagues has evolved over the past nine months.

How is Qthena used within Budde Schou?

We use Qthena as an assistant when preparing responses to office actions and for other patent-related tasks. I also see it as a kind of trainee or sparing Partner, someone I can talk to, exchange ideas with and use as a sounding board to explore different approaches.

What criteria led you to choose Qthena?

I tried a lot of different solutions but all of them I didn't like so much because it was like asking them a question and getting a completely opaque response.

What I really liked about Qthena - and that was the first time I saw that - was the feeling that I was onboarded in the decision process. We work together towards a result. I felt more ownership over the outcome and it was the first time I had experienced that with an AI solution. That was the main reason we chose Qthena.

Another important factor was its connection with Equinox, which we had just implemented at the firm.

Could you share some examples of the results you have already achieved or expect to achieve with Qthena?

I think we have already improved the way we prepare our responses before filing them. We now have more time to work through the material, develop a deeper understanding of the issues and produce more thoroughly considered, high-quality results.

We've only been using Qthena for around nine months, so we're still at a relatively early stage. But I've already noticed a clear change in how people in the firm approach it.

In the beginning, not everyone was particularly enthusiastic. People weren't necessarily against it, but they weren't exactly cheering me on either! Now, colleagues come to me and say, "Wow, this is really cool!" I can also see that some people are using it much more frequently than they did at the start.

That change in engagement is encouraging. We've already seen benefits, but I think there is still a lot of potential to explore. The more familiar people become with Qthena and the more they incorporate it into their daily work, the more possibilities I believe we'll discover.
